ジニアはジニア(ヒャクニチソウ)属の園芸種の総称である。ジニア属の植物はメキシコ、アメリカに約20種がある。ヒャクニチソウ（百日草）はZinnia elegansであり、昔から馴染みの花であり、野生化しているものも見かけられる。最近では多数の園芸品種がある。
　ジニア属の中ではヒャクニチソウの他に、ホソバヒャクニチソウ、シュッコンヒャクニチソウ、メキシコヒャクニチソウ、ヒメヒャクニチソウなどが栽培され、野生化しているものもある。
　ホソバヒャクニチソウZinnia angustifoliaは花が一重でデージーの花に似て、直径2.5㎝以下と小さい。このホソバヒャクニチソウとヒャクニチソウとのハイブリッドの1つにジニア・ハイブリッド・プロフュージョンがあり、最近、よく栽培され、ジニアと呼ばれている。
　　写真のものは'Profusion Yellow' と思われる。ホソバヒャクニチソウに花がよく似ているが、葉が細くない。ヒャクニチソウの品種として Zinnia elegans 'Profusion Yellow'とされていることも多い。

　1年草又は多年草又は亜低木。茎は平伏又は直立。葉は茎葉、対生又は類対生、無柄又は短柄。葉身は針状、楕円形、線状披針形、披針形、線形、長楕円形、又は卵形、両面に毛があり、普通、腺点があり、基部は円形～楔形、茎に鞘状、全縁。頂部に単生する頭状花序の複合花序。頭状花序は普通、放射性。総苞は鐘形～円筒形～半球形。総苞片は宿存性、3又は4列につく。花托は円錐形、、パレアは淡色。周辺小花は雌性、類似。花冠は、黄色、橙色、赤色、栗色、紫色又は白色。中心小花は両性、稔性。花冠は普通、黄色～帯赤色、ときに紫色を帯び、筒部は円筒状ののど部より短い。花冠裂片は5個、披針状卵形。痩果は3角(かど)があるか又は扁平、中心小花の痩果は翼がなく、冠毛は無又は宿存性の1～3(又は4)個の芒又は歯状の鱗片。
　世界に約20種があり、メキシコ、USAに分布する。
