カーネーションはナデシコ科ナデシコ属の栽培種。観賞用に栽培され、古くから栽培される種である。原産地は地中海沿岸地域とされるが、Dianthus caryophyllusの原種が特定できず、古くから栽培される種である。現在のDianthus caryophyllus はオランダセキチクとセキチクの交雑種である。17世紀にはイギリスやオランダで既に300種以上の品種が栽培されていたと言われ、現在では多数の品種がある。
　多年草、日本では1、2年草として栽培される。茎は直立、高さ30～90㎝。葉、茎は緑色で粉白色を帯びる。葉は対生し、無柄、狭線形、緑色～灰緑色～青緑色～紫色。花は茎の頂部に単生又は束生し、直径3～5㎝又は6～8.5㎝、両性、クローブ（丁子）の強い甘い香りがある。萼は筒形、長さ2～3㎝以下、しばしば紫色を帯びる。萼の基部の苞(鱗片)は4～6個、卵形で先が尖り、萼の長さより短い。花弁は普通、多数密集してつき、縁に鋸歯があり、赤色、ピンク色、白色、黄色、緑色、絞りなど、最近では青色も開発されている。八重のボーダーカーネーションは花弁が40個程度。雄しべは花弁の数と同数又は花弁の数の2倍が1又は2輪につく。果実は蒴果。種子は黒色。開期は6～7月(秋まき)又は6～9月(春まき)。
　日本には江戸時代初期の正保～万治年間（1644～1660）にオランダセキチク(あんじゃべる)が輸入されたと、享保年間の1733年に出版された「地錦抄附録」（地錦抄20巻の17-18巻・12-13/93に14種、孔雀丸なでしこ、獅子牡丹あんしゃべる、十五城あんしゃべる、など）に記録されている。1681年出版の『花壇綱目』にも「あんじゃべる」が記載されている。宝暦年間の1755年出版の『繪本野山草』5巻[3]8/28にもなでしこ、唐なでしことともに図が掲載されている。現在のカーネーションはオランダセキチクとセキチクの交雑により作られたものであり、文久3年(1863）にカーネーションがイギリスから渡来したと『新渡花葉図譜』に記載されている。

園芸種のタイプ　Types of Carnations

1 スタンダード Large flowered Carnations：1本の茎の先に1輪の花がつく。高さ45～60㎝。
2 スプレー咲き Spray Carnations (Mini Carnations) ：1本の茎が先端で枝分かれして、多数の花がつく。高さ45～60㎝。
3 矮性　 Dwarf flowered Carnations：1本の茎に数個の小さな花がつく。高さ25～30㎝。

花のタイプ　Types of Flowes

1 剣弁咲き： 花弁の縁にギザギザした切れ込みが入る
2 極剣弁咲き：花弁が細く、剣のように尖る。別名はスター咲き。
3 丸弁咲き：花弁の縁に切れ込みが無いか又はほとんど無い。
4 一重咲き：ナデシコと見分けがつきにくく、一重又は半八重咲き。小輪
